Cleckheaton racer Josh Caygill has had a rookie season to remember.

The 23-year-old, who switched from competing on two wheels to four at the start of the year, brought his maiden season of car racing to a successful conclusion.

After serious injury forced him to step back from racing Supersport class in the British Superbikes Championship, Caygill completed his first season in the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup in ninth place overall in the championship standings – winning the top ‘rookie’ title by a big margin.

And with a sense of achievement at having adapted well Caygill said: “I’m 100 per cent happy with what I have achieved this season.

“I knew there would be a lot to learn and racing cars is very different to what I was used to on two wheels in the British Supersport Championship – but I was pleased that the speed was there.

“I maybe tried a bit too hard on some occasions, and I certainly suffered some bad luck – but it was a good season.”

And after his very promising first season Caygill is looking forward to further success in 2014.

“It’s a case now of learning from the errors made in 2013 and linking everything up a bit better, so hopefully I can get a smoother run in 2014,” said Caygill, who is backed by his family businesses Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire) and Van Craft, as well as by Clough and Co, fleet management firm SMUK, lovebuddy.com, Doodson Insurance, Close Motor Finance and Impact Repair Centre, plus Fuchs-Silkolene.

Caygill’s highlight was a sixth place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa-Francorchamps and Josh’s AWM/Warranty Direct Golf GTI placed in the top 10 on eight occasions from 14 outings in the VW Cup.

He also took part in the VAG Trophy where he took the Class A Championship win at Snetterton along with the double race win.

“It was a great way to end my rookie season with the championship and the double win,” added Caygill.

“It will certainly make the winter pass by a little easier.”

Caygill’s plans for the 2014 car racing season have yet to be finalised, but one of his priorities is a return to the VW Cup UK with a newly built VW Scirocco.

He will also line up with KPM Motorsport in the Prestigious Dubai 24HR Race in January Alongside British Touring Car Driver Tom Onslow-Cole.
