The opportunity to land double points and go back to the top of the championship standings is firing up racer Joe Irving.

The Holmfirth teenager could return to the top of the Motul Motostar British Championship rankings with 50 points up for grabs at round nine of the series at Donington Park at the weekend.

The bonus comes as round eight at Cadwell Park was rained off over the August Bank Holiday weekend and since then Irving has tried his hand in MotoGP.

Irving took his place on the grid for the Moto3 race on his Redline KTM and even though he did not finish he was pleased to have had the experience of a MotoGP weekend.

“I learnt so much riding with such a high level of rider,” said Irving.

“I’m feeling really confident going into Donington, especially after the weekend at the MotoGP.

“And also there are double points available as we have to re-run the race that got cancelled at Cadwell Park, so it is a big chance.”

Irving lies second in the standings on 136 points after his win in round seven at Oulton Park last moth, and he is only 14 points behind leader Jordan Weaving, the Jordan Racing Burkert KTM rider from Stroud.
