It will be a case of suck it and see for Jelly Snake Racing team driver Ash Carter as he goes into his first season in the Classic 2CV Championship.

The season starts this weekend with two races at Cheshire’s Oulton Park venue and Huddersfield racer Carter can’t wait.

“I have raced in other people’s cars in the past, but I wanted to get into it on my own,” he said.

“Racing was what I wanted to do, and the 2CV appealed because the car is not too difficult to work on and doesn’t take a massive amount of money to keep racing.

“It has been 18 months worth of preparing the car but now we are ready to get going.”

This season will be the 26th year of Citroen 2CV racing in the UK – making it one of the UK’s longest running one-make Championship.

The 2CVParts.com Championship season features four double-header meetings starting at Oulton Park, then at Brands Hatch Indy, Cadwell Park and North Yorkshire circuit Croft.

Each meeting will have two 20 minute races, while at the Croft meeting there will be third race – a two hour Enduro – to help teams and drivers prepare for the special challenges of long distance racing.

Over the weekend of August 21-23, there will be the 25th running of the 2CV 24 Hour race will be staged at the Anglesey circuit.

“The 24-hour race was what originally sparked my interest, but we will have to see how we go,” added Carter, who has received backing from town centre shop Pink Cadillac.

“However, as this is our first season we have no benchmark and we are entered in the economy class event which is for cars with fewer modifications, so we will be a bit slower than some of the others on the track.

“Initially we are just looking at having a go at the 20 minute races, but hopefully at some stage we may be in a position to have a go at the 24-hour race.

“It is a long-standing championship and there are a lot of people who have raced in it for years, so the competition should be very good.”

And the reason behind the team’s rather unusual Jelly Snake moniker is down to a discovery made when Carter was putting his car together.

“When I got the car I was offered a shell that was better than the one we had,” he explained.

“When we were swapping the shells I had to take the interior apart and there under the dashboard was the toy that gave the team its name.”
