Huddersfield's world champion racer Tom Sykes has been on duty in Monte Carlo.

The fourth annual FIM (International Motorcycling Federation) Gala awards ceremony was held at the “Salle des Etoiles” as all 2013 World Champions of each discipline received a trophy.

It was a first appearance for the 28-year-old from Fenay Bridge on the stage, and he was joined by Ichiro Yoda, Kawasaki Racing Team plan manager and Biel Roda, the KRT marketing manager.

The Kawasaki team could be preparing to head for pastures new next season after plans were revealed to take the World Superbike Championship back to South Africa in 2014 after a three-year break.

South Africa has appeared on the provisional calendar for the 2014 eni FIM World Superbike Championship with a round scheduled to be held at Phakisa Freeway in the Free State on October 19.

“We have signed a Terms of Contract short-form agreement with Dorna, the WSBK Promoters, and will enter into a long-form agreement subject to certain conditions being met,” said Anthony Lauter of GAS Sports, who will be organisers of the event.

“We still need to secure the necessary financial guarantees required by Dorna and the Phakisa Freeway must first pass an FIM circuit inspection.

“ We’re confident we will meet these conditions.

“The race weekend programme will also include World Supersport series and several top South African riders can be expected to be seen in action.”
