HOME club rider Robert Armson held off a strong challenge to top the Novices class at the Huddersfield Falcon MCC’s annual Greenwood Trophy Trial.

Staged at Cartworth Moor the event saw Spen Valley member Peter Field almost spoil the Falcon party by tracking winner Armson.

However, the challenge faded when Field stopped on lap one in section 11 and he took second place, followed by Andrew Jackson and Gary Morley.

Former world trials champion Yrjo Vesterinen journeyed over from Lancashire to ride his Bultaco and slotted his immaculate machine into eighth place.

His result edged out Nick Eagleton, riding his Majesty and talented Fantic-mounted Oliver Fortune.

A total of 67 riders competed over three laps of fifteen sections at the popular venue of Whitegate Farm, with the course featuring mainly streams and bankings.

The trophy sponsor, Nigel Greenwood, marked the course and his choice of routes was reflected in the fact that he is no mean performer on his TLR Honda.

There were seven tie-breakers in the Clubman Novice class where there were 36 contenders – the top 15 all clocked less than 20 marks.

Recently married Ben Robinson opted for a Triumph Cub instead of his usual Gas Gas and was the only Pre 65 rider on the Clubman course route and finished a creditable 11th overall.

On the Clubman easy course Paul Heys (Triumph Cub) outfoxed old master Dave Thorpe (Triumph Cub) ahead of Chris Haigh (Velocette) with Mick Grant (BSA) close behind.
