Trials bike club Huddersfield Falcons fly at Dean Head

THE Huddersfield Falcon MCC were glad to see some action as they staged the second meeting in the Novice & Beginners Championship at Dean Head.

After seeing two out of three events cancelled so far this year, the club managed to put on the event at the Scammonden Water venue.

Bill Swallow marked out the course, but could not attend on the day of the trial so Clerk of Course duties fell to Mike Washington.

Section one in the wood at the head of the quarry was a gentle ‘lead-in’ for all 41 riders, but this was immediately followed by a quite difficult second section which involved a short steep climb with a couple of rock steps and then a tight turn round a tree.

Overall winner Stewart Oughton was the only rider to go ‘clean’ on the first lap and even he had a five on the section on the third lap.

Section three was another new section where the riders had to negotiate the soft mud of a long track.

The first 10 hard course riders seemed to have little difficulty with this section, but the 50/50 Course riders seemed to be having difficulty as there were few cleans gained.

Section four appeared to present little difficulty for the Hard Course riders, but it particularly demanded concentration and commitment from those on the easy course as they had to traverse a soft grassy hill – amazingly this hill presented no problems for Class ‘D’ rider Henry Stephenson on his electric OSET as he only dropped two marks on this section all day.

The third round of the club’s Novice & Beginners Championship is on April 28, at Diggle, where landowner, Bill Francis, has already identified one or two new sections from last year.
