A thick blanket of fog shrouded the compact Horn Hill venue high above New Mill for Huddersfield Falcons 9th club championship trial last Sunday.
Undeterred, a healthy entry of forty five turned out to test their skills against the Mick Rock and Bob Tyas devised course. Some recent tree pruning
by the land owner had opened up some new possibilities allowing nine sections to be plotted around the old stone quarry workings, each to be ridden over four laps.
On the championship course it was yet another closely fought battle between friends and rivals Ben Robinson and Simon Tyas with Barnsley’s Shaun Hoyle rounding out the top three. Robinson managed to gain a winning advantage on the very tricky section four.
A muddy descent leading to a series of undercut rock steps and drops, Robinson mastered this on all but one of his four attempts; Tyas completely lost the plot losing seventeen of his total of twenty seven, whilst Hoyle was next best with a respectable total of eight.
The muddy conditions certainly gave the Clubman A riders something to think about with youth rider Aaron Goodlad finally fulfilling his potential to record a respectable win over a returning Curtis Johnson and British Superbike star Tom Tunstall.
Four of the nine sections were ridden as hard route options and these certainly did punish, the first of these being section three.
A muddy turn to an off cambered rock slab and steep climb were the problems with many riders losing grip on the mud covered slab.
Goodlad had no such problem escaping without loss, Johnson was next best on three.
Nick Eagleton was the master of the Clubman B route turning in a winning total of sixteen; he was followed by Chris Wilson and Paul Hobson, these two riders making a welcome return to Falcon events.
Eagleton gained an advantage as early as section two, escaping without loss on every lap; featuring a twisting climb leading to a final rock step, many lost traction prior to the final step.
Aden Roper, once again beating his father Ian was next best here on five. Surprising, Eagleton struggled on the following section; the Clubman B riders were spared the difficult ascent but still had a muddy off cambered rock slab to deal with.
Eagleton was off the pace with a costly total of ten, best performance was yet another returning to completion rider Tom Ward on one.
Biggest winning margin of the day came on the White route designed for riders new to the sport. Best performance went to Steve Ellis on eleven, he was well clear of runner up, the ever improving Lewis Beardsell on his Beta.
Ellis was steady all day with only section four troubling him losing seven of his total here. Worthy of mention is Ben Tyas, riding in only his second trial on his electric powered Oset.
The muddy conditions didn’t really suit his little electric bike although he did improve with every lap, posting his best performance on his final lap.
Overall, a good, testing days sport was had by all although heavy Rain prior to the event had resulted in some testing conditions.
Falcons now take a short break before their final championship trial due to be held on 7th December.
