NEW MILL racer Gabz Cullaigh was in really excellent form in his first trip abroad as a Junior track rider.
He was part of a four-man ODP team that took part in an international two-day track meeting in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, racing against teams from Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Germany and Holland.
The GB team were Tao Geoghegan Hart (Cycling Club Hackney), Joe Evans (Hargroves RT), Matt Gibson (Velocity RT) and Cullaigh (RST).
The main agenda for the trip was to give the squad real competition experience of team riding by working for each other in specific track disciplines.
On the first day, Cullaigh finished second in the 60-lap Scratch qualifier; won the 32-lap one-on-one Derny race; and led out teammate Gibson to a win in the 60-lap Points qualifier.
Then in the team pursuit, his team posted 4.22 to finish second to Denmark, who won by just 0.4sec.
On day two he finished third to two Danish riders in the Devil; posted 3.37 in the individual pursuit; and finished third in the 60 lap Scratch final after being led out by Geoghegan Hart.
In the 60-lap Points race Cullaigh and Geoghegan Hart executed a textbook lead-out for Gibson from five laps out, and almost lapped the rest of the field in doing so.
Cullaigh led out from three to go but the one other rider to go with them, from Belgium, just nudged ahead of Gibson to take the win on the line.
