Paul Simpson has been crowned West Yorkshire Sport’s Community Games Shining Light.

Simpson, from Deighton, set up table tennis sessions for people with learning disabilities, after being involved in a table tennis community event two years ago at Deighton Carnival.

It was there he realised that people with a disability receive so many benefits from engaging in the sport.

He worked with local disability advocacy groups to develop learning disabilities table tennis sessions, which is a now a successful club thriving with participants who play both for leisure and some who compete. Dave Moorcroft, one of the Shining Light judges said: “Paul has shown excellent leadership and has developed the Community Games concept into helping people with a disability and other target groups. He is an inspirational person and a great volunteer.”

Paul runs disability sessions from 2pm to 3.30pm and junior sessions from 3.30-5pm every Saturday. The sessions cost £3 and welcome people with a learning disability of all ages and abilities.
