Aaliyha Powell, Caden Cunningham and Charlotte Simpson of Quest Taekwondo team all took gold medals in the Nottinghamshire Championships.
Powell competed in the Cadet Women’s flyweight category – a step up in weight but not a challenge for an atlete whose first taste of international competition was last year’s World Championships.
She had two matches, which she dominated and further stamped her claim as Britain’s No1, being Yorkshire and Nottingham Open Champion.
Cunningham is in the top three in the country and has had some great performances so far this year.
At the Nottingham Wild Cats Arena, competing in the under 45kg category, he got the best result of his competition year so far, convincingly defeating Matthew Guest (the GB No1) in the semi-finals.
He then went on to take a well-deserved gold and is now working towards the British National Championships in September, which are being held for the first time at the Copper Box Arena on the Olympic Park in London, and hoping to reclaim his British title.
Simpson has had a brilliant year, having already qualified for the GB Cadet team through her victories in Germany and the Netherlands earlier in the spring.
She was entered into the heavyweight Women’s Cadet, a category up from her usual weight division, but despite facing taller, heavier opponents she took the gold in impressive fashion.
Three other Quest athletes took gold in their respective categories as well as one silver and seven bronze medals, earning third team place.
The team are going from strength to strength and coach Mike McKenzie said: “The team did extremely well and I was pleased with everyone’s performance.
“Aaliyha, Charlotte and Caden all gave international class performances.
“Next month there is the Olympic Games in Rio and the GB Taekwondo team should do really well.
“Our team is on the pathway to the Games and, hopefully, in the not too distant future they will get there.”
The Great Britain Cadet team for the European Championships in Romania in September will be announced soon.
