ROBERT READ is through to the third round of the Club and Institute Union’s National Snooker Championship – and has still to play a match!

The Huddersfield Open champion, who was given a bye in the first round, was to have played Huddersfield-born tournament pro Kuldesh Johal next Wednesday at Lindley WMC.

But former Scissett product Johal, who now plays out of Leeds, and was hammered 6-3 by Read last year in a challenge match, has conceded the tie to the Lindley player.

Meanwhile, Read’s Lindley teammate Naeem plays in the second round of the same tournament tomorrow against A Banman from Lofthouse Gate WMC (Wakefield), also at Lindley WMC at 7.30pm.

Lofthouse also provide the opposition in the team event for Lindley, this time at Wakefield on Sunday, when Read and Naeem are joined by Johnny Gallagher in the second round tie.

Lindley had beaten Gallagher’s former club, King Cross WMC in the opening round.

In the Yorkshire League, Huddersfield’s snooker team entertained Selby Seconds at Crosland Moor in their opening fixture of the new season, and won 5-1. Jason McMahon had a half-century break in his opening frame against A Smith, winning 71-35 and 62-15 for a 2-0 lead, before Hayden Corbett narrowly beat Kevin Hawksworth 2-0 (62-61 and 49-41), while Colin Hawkins halved his match against S Wadsworth (77-33 and 28-64).

Huddersfield face Castleford away in their next match on Sunday.
