The early weeks of the League season have already produced some interesting results.

Brooks B, who include youngsters Harry Ness and Matt Ellis, together with Shaun Ellis, pulled off an excellent 6-4 win against their A team.

John Senior, brother of Russell, had a difficult evening losing all three while Ness had an excellent victory over Neil Crosland.

The last match of the night paired Russell Senior against Shaun Ellis, with Senior needing a win to secure a draw for his side.

He started well, winning the first two games 12-10, 11-4, but Ellis then adjusted his game and moved closer to the table, allowing him to half volley his returns and unsettle his opponent.

He completely swung the game round and won the next three games 11-6, 11-8, 11-4.

Brooks B followed this up with an emphatic 8-2 victory over David Brown A – Ness beating Jonathan Taylor in three straight games to join Shaun Ellis in being undefeated. Matt Ellis had a close but merited win over Liam Fearn to further boost his confidence.

Wilshaw A’s Ken Ward surrendered his 100% record to Kingsmith B’s Shaun Forbes. Having comfortably won the first game 11-1, Ward lost the next three 11-7, 11-9,11-5.

Earlier Forbes had lost to Francis Cioffi in four close games. Wilshaw came out on top 6-4 to confirm their good start to life in the top division.

In Division II, Kingsmith D had a highly creditable 6-4 win over Marsh C.

David Arnold and David Barrow, who are both playing in the Second Division for the first time, together with Peter Heywood, were up against seasoned campaigners in Michael Townend, Eddie Bailes and Neil Dawson.

Heywood’s opening victory over Neil Dawson was to be his only win of the night but his colleagues both hit form.

Barrow, who has an excellent eye and fierce forehand, had an epic tussle with Townend, winning 11-8 in the fifth.

Arnold disposed of Bailes in four games to give his side a 3-0 lead. Both Barrow and Arnold fell to the spin and guile of Dawson, but both had victories over Bailes. Townend had an epic struggle with Heywood in the final match, clinching it 12-10 in the deciding fifth game after winning the first two games 11-9, 11-7 and losing the next 10-12, 8-11.
