OAKFIELD tennis club are celebrating promotion for three of their teams in their centenary year.

The Men’s A team at the Birkby-based tennis and bowling club held off the challenges of Denby Dale A and Thongsbridge D to secure second place in Division III of the Huddersfield and District League.

After finishing third for the last three years, the team will now take their place in the Second Division for only the third time in their history.

The team’s main squad players were Suresh Buttoo, Luke Granata, Howard Partington, Freddie Perry, Kevin Ruttle, David Wood (captain) and Steve Yates.

In the Calderdale League, the Men’s C team also grabbed second place in Division II, after a season-long battle with a formidable Marsden squad finished with Oakfield just missing out on top spot.

The Oakfield C squad comprised Steve Bainbridge, Nadio Granata, Peter Sutcliffe (captain), David Wood and Steve Yates.

Essential cameo performances also came from Kevin Ruttle, Irfan Khalid and Freddie Perry, who all helped out from other teams when called upon.

In what has been a fantastic year for the club, the Ladies B team also secured promotion from Huddersfield Division V, beating a team from Gregory Fields in a tense second-place play-off.

The team regularly featured Janet Blackburn, Ailsha Care, Pat Dignan, Adrienne Harmon, Claire Howe, Mel Hudson (captain), Birgitte Nielsen and Heather Partington.

The success illustrates Oakfield are in a very healthy state as, across eight senior teams competing hard at all levels, more players have been involved in 2011 than ever before.

Oakfield’s annual dinner and presentation is at YMCA on Friday, October 28.
