University of Huddersfield’s Mens Handball team have qualified for the national finals in London on March 8 and 9.

It’s the pinnacle for university teams from across the country and Huddersfield qualified for the finals – at Sporthouse in the capital – from a regional qualifying tournament in Leeds.

First up, Huddersfield won 10-7 against Dundee’s first team, and then they followed up with a comprehensive win against Robert Gordon followed by a 10-9 defeat to Liverpool John Moores.

Huddersfield secured a three-way tie at the top of the standings with a 13-4 crushing of Dundee’s second team - leaving them level with Dundee Firsts and Liverpool John Moores.

The head-to-head could not sort out the top three final positions, so it went to points difference and this resulted in Huddersfield finishing second in the group, meaning they were seeded in the group draw for the finals. Huddersfield will be in Group A with Southampton, Dundee First, Essex, Brighton and University College London.

The team consists of a range of nationalities and also a range of abilities, with some players having started playing only in September last year and others having played for many years in their home countries.

Handball gained big recognition here after the terrific 2012 London Olympics.
