University of Huddersfield’s mens tennis team have won their division after going all season undefeated.
The team ran away with the Northern 4A League title, having won six and drawn only two of their eight matches this campaign, whitewashing UCLAN and Keele University on the way.
The success is the first time the side have finished top in over eight years and marks a second promotion in three years for the rapidly-improving team.
The seven-man squad included Jonathan Youdale, Miroslav Stehik, Glen Mann, Callum Watson, Thomas Bailey, Connor Moran and Ashley Lau.
Team captain and No1 player Youdale, 22, played in each of the eight matches, recording impressive wins in every one of his singles rubbers.
Youdale, jocularly likened to Spaniard Rafael Nadal by teammates and coaches for his left-handedness, claims the strength in depth of the squad was the key factor in comfortably claiming the title.
“I’d say the league success was completely down to the strength of the team that we managed to field week in, week out,” he explained.
“Having an assembly of solid players as back-up definitely helped out this year too.”
Youdale also claims the arrival of 22-year-old Czech Repulic native, Miroslav Stehik, was vital to the team’s success.
“I think Miroslav was definitely our star player,” he said. “You could always rely on him to come away with a result.”
