Rookie racer Ashley Carter has decided to take on the challenge of a 24-hour endurance race.

The 36-year-old from Brackenhall entered the Classic 2CV Racing championship this season not expecting to take on the challenge of the Anglesey day-night event at the end of August.

However, his progress over the first six rounds – which have taken in meetings at Cheshire’s Oulton Park, Kent Brands Hatch and Lincolnshire’s Cadwell Park – have convinced him to give the 24-hour race in North Wales a shot.

“We have done well this year, and we have had two wins in our class at Oulton Park and Cadwell,” said Carter.

“Initially we weren’t going to go to North Wales, but I now have a team together that will have a go.

“Over the season I have met up with two guys from Melton Mowbray, who have a car in the championship themselves, and another driver from Grantham and we put a team together.”

The Anglesey event is over the weekend of August 22-23, but Carter has a chance to get a taste of seeing how far he can push the Jelly Snake Racing team’s Pink Cadillac sponsored 2CV performs over longer distances at Croft next month.

The North Yorkshire circuit at Dalton-on-Tees hosts rounds six and seven of the Classic 2CV Racing championship on July 11-12.

But in addition to the two 20 minute races Croft will also feature a two-hour race.

“We intend to run the Croft two-hour race as we would the 24-hour,” explained Carter.

“We are already busy modifying the car, which will cost about £500 just for the Croft race, and run it with the lights on.

“I have guys who will crew for me, and hopefully we will be able to have a good test before we get ready for Anglesey.”
