YORKSHIRE’S youth riders, including several from Huddersfield, won both the Boys and Girls Inter Regional Road Championships in Perthshire, Scotland.

The first event of the weekend was an extremely hilly team time trial near Loch Faskally.

The Yorkshire Girls team of Abby Parkinson (RST RT-Trigon), Melissa Lowther (Aire Valley RT), Lauren O’Brien (Aire Valley RT) and Amira Mellor (Holme Valley Wheelers) recorded the fastest time of 16 minutes 36 seconds taking 22 seconds out of the Welsh team.

The Yorkshire Boys team of Jacob Scott (Planet X), Leon Gledhill (Planet X), Ollie Wood (Aire Valley RT) and Jake Womersley (Aire Valley RT) matched the girls by beating a strong North West team into second place by nine seconds stopping the clock in 13.08.

The Boys race at Coupar Angus on Saturday was abandoned due to bad weather after several riders had crashed including Gledhill and Womersley, Sunday’s race at St David’s was extended to 70km.

Yorkshire’s best placed rider was Ollie Wood who won the bunch sprint for seventh place, Scott and Womersley were also handily place in 10th and 13th which was enough to give them the team prize.

The Girls team finished strongly in both road races with Melissa Lowther and Lauren O’Brien getting third and eighth on Saturday, and then second and 14th on Sunday.

Emily Kay won both races, but the more consistent results from Yorkshire gave them the win overall.

Yorkshire’s best Youth riders will be doing battle with youngsters from all over the UK on Sunday, July 24, at the National Youth Championships in Lister Park, Bradford.

A massive 355 riders are on the start sheet in races for Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 on a challenging course with a long climb on each lap.

Other events on the day include Go Ride Racing for Under 8, Bike Expo with stands from top exhibitors, Roller Racing and BMX Stunt Teams, a great day out for all the family – racing starts at 10am.

Holme Valley Wheeler’s Richard Binks winning form continued in the LVRC event at North Newbald near Beverley.

Racing in the B Category Binks battled through torrential rain on the second lap and stormed up the finishing hill ahead of Steve Ellis (Out Of The Saddle CC) in second and Kevin Stuart (Leeds Mercury) in third.
