Premier Taekwondo took a team of 15 to the Yorkshire Open and returned with 13 medals.

And a fifth-placed finish was a best for the Birkby-based club.

Camran Hassan (2nd Poom) showed his experience in two fights and finished his final 7-3 to take gold.

Charisma Khawaja (2nd Poom) came up against an opponent who had previously beaten her, but she turned around that form with a dominant show and won 10-8 to claim the gold medal.

Second row: Owen Wraight (bronze), Balpreet Aujla (bronze), James Maxted (bronze), Nicholas Kacica (silver), Jamie Mcintosh. Front: Xavier Kacica (bronze) and Jayden Elson (gold)

Kyla Julien (2nd Poom) had two fights on the day and had to battle hard to win her gold.

As the first match began, Kyla was dominating her opponent 8-1 but, as the second round ended, Julien’s opponent was leading 8-10.

With 15 seconds to go, Kyla scored a head shot gaining her three points which took her into the final.

The final was also tough, but she scored a 1-0 win.

Jayden Elson (Red Tag), one of the younger novice players, dominated both his fights.

Solid body and head shots earned him an 11-4 win and then, in the final, he dominated 12-3 for gold.

Danisha Cowell (2nd Poom) has recently returned to elite training after a short break away from competing.

She fought well in her final, but went down 7-3 to take silver. The club hope, with more training, she will soon be back to her best.

James Ince (2nd Poom) had three fights. The first was won on golden point with a classic body shot.

He took the second 6-0 and then faced a very tough final. He eventually went down 8-3 but came away with silver.

Nicholas Kacica (Blue belt) won a fantastic first match 12-5 and then went through to the final with a 1-0 success.

Against a taller opponent, he had to settle for silver, losing 7-4.

Laiqah Khawaja (1st poom) is new to competing but fought well before going down 7-1 in the final and taking home silver.

Hamzeh Ramezani (2nd Poom) is settling into his new category in Juniors.

Fighting to get to the final, he lost 13-2 and took home a bronze medal, but he is now training to move down a weight category, which could prove fruitful.

Balpreet Aujla (Black Tag) has proved to be a strong fighter but could not find his best form and lost 3-0, taking a bronze.

James Maxted (Red belt) also picked up a bronze medal after losing just 1-0 to a tough opponent.

Owen Wraight (2nd Poom) has been out of the ring for some time but showed great strength and technique to win bronze, losing his match 6-4.

Xavier Kacica (Green belt) is Premier’s youngest fighter and is growing with experience.

He took bronze after a brave battle, going down 5-3.

Jamie McIntosh (2nd Poom) unfortunately was not on top form and lost out on a medal 6-1.

Jamila Siddiqui (1st Poom) is back after a broken leg and just getting back into competition. She lost by two points to miss a medal.

A team of five Cadets and Juniors – Kyla Julien, James Ince, Hamzeh Ramezani, Camran Hassan and Charisma Khawaja – are going to the Greece Open in June.

It’s a G1 ranked event, and the quintet are already training hard.
