AN inexperienced Emley Moor suffered a 38-20 Division I West defeat at Westgate Wolves.

But the club’s youngsters were still able to give a good account of themselves and can be well satisfied with their efforts.

The likes of Sam Parker and Simon Walker may have been making their first-team debuts, but they didn’t look out of place at the higher level, which bodes well for the future.

In fact, winger Parker wasted little time making a positive impression, darting over for his side’s opening try, converted by Jack Dyson, to give Moor a 6-4 lead.

And when Dyson then slotted over a penalty to extend the advantage to four points, the visitors were looking good.

But that hope had been extinguished by half-time as the Wolves stepped up a gear to open up a 22-8 lead.

The home side then scored again at the start of the second half before Nathan Kaye and Dan Pawson both crossed for converted tries to reduce the deficit to 32-20.

Yet despite the best efforts of the likes of Parker, Walker, Oliver Davidson, Richard Sharpe and the Adamski brothers, Moor were unable to get any closer and Westgate scored again to complete the scoring.

Because of the first team being stretched, it had a knock-on effect for Moor’s second string, who were beaten 50-4 by Oldham-based Division V side Hollinwood in the Pennine Supplementary Cup.

It proved a tough afternoon from start to finish for the hosts against a well-drilled and strong-running Lancashire side.

The only bright moments in the game were the strong-running game of Daz Southwell, who scored his side’s only score from a quick tap penalty, and also Moor’s never-say-die attitude, which gained praise from the visitors coach.
