DEFENCE proved to be the key as Meltham All Blacks notched a 10-0 home win over Burley Lions in Division V of the Pennine League.

Burley started quickly and pressured the Meltham line on several occasions, varying their attack from running the ball on the last, chipping through or utilising the high ball.

All of these were diffused by the home defence allowing Meltham to get on the front foot with the good rotation of replacements.

The only try, and conversion, in the first half came from a powerful run from Matt Lodge who, despite the attention of several defenders, forced his way over the line underneath the posts – Rob Lewis stepped up to add the extra points.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first half, but this time Lewis was the try-scorer, failing to add the goal.
