Amateur RL: New Australian signings make their mark at Slaithwaite Saracens

SLAITHWAITE Saracens have boosted their squad with the signing of two Australians.

And both men underlined their potential with strong performances of the bench as their new side won 36-10 at Queensbury to make it four Pennine League Premier Division triumphs out of four.

Matthew Renolds and Travis Fiechtner already look very handy players and seem certain to enhance the quality of an already impressive squad.

But the overall key to what was a super success was the team performance, with everyone making a valuable contribution.

Slaithwaite made a good start and opened the scoring after five minutes when Chris Clarke went over in the corner and Richard Flooks followed up with a second to make it 8-6 at the break.

It wasn’t until the 60th minute that Slaithwaite extended their lead with a Stuart Dunbar try, converted by Gavin Dyson.

Then in the space of eight minutes the Saracens scored 18 points, with tries from Stuart Dunbar (2), Tom Guinan and Chris Clarke and a Flooks conversion.

Then on the last set of six Dunbar went in for his fourth try which Flooks converted.

Another side in excellent form are Newsome Panthers, who maintained their early First Division title challenge with an impressive 52-18 home triumph over Crigglestone, while Emley Moor are third in Division II after beating Doncaster Toll Bar 40-26.
