THERE was home comfort for Newsome Panthers and Lindley Swifts in the Pennine Presidents Cup first round draw.

The Pennine League Division I rivals met in a derby showdown at Newsome High School with the Panthers coming out on top 38-24.

Newsome, who moved up to third in the table, are at home in the cup competition against Castleford side Allerton Bywater, while the Swifts play hosts to Dearne Valley Bulldogs.

In the Premier Division Slaithwaite Saracens’ poor start to the season continued as they were beaten 18-12 at Queensbury.

The first half saw the home side completely in control and Saracens were 10 points down at half-time, and their woes increased as Queensbury grabbed another try and goal early in the second period.

It wasn’t until ten minutes from time that Slaithwaite opened their account with first Richard Flooks and then Jason Wood going over for tries and Gavin Dyson added the goals to see them trail by only four points, but a last minute penalty saw Queensbury to victory.

Saracens have a bye in the cup, along with Emley Moor whose first team suffered a setback in the Championship Division as they were beaten 46-10 at home by Dewsbury Moor.

Moor’s Championship rivals St Joseph’s, who were without a fixture at the weekend, are the only team to travel in the first round of the cup having been drawn away at their divisional rivals Wibsey Warriors.

Emley Moor’s A team suffered a heavy defeat away to Dewsbury Moor A going down 44-4 in Division VII of the Pennine League.

Moor struggled to get to grips with a physical Dewsbury team, who were boosted by three former ex-professional players, including Dewsbury Rams coach Warren Jowitt, in a match well refereed by former Super League official Steve Presley, it was mostly one-way traffic but there were some bright moments for the visitors.

A never say die attitude was present all game, and Moor will try and take the positives into next week’s game against bottom of the table Greetland.
