St Joseph's opened their Pennine League Championship One campaign with a short trip over the M62 to play Brighouse Rangers but it was the home side who came away with a 30-20 win.

From the kick off Joes dominated possession and territory but were unable to spring open the Rangers defence.

Brighouse finally got the ball in Joes’ half of the field and scored a breakaway try under the post which was converted.

The rest of the half followed a similar pattern with Saints unable to score, but before half-time Brighouse scored a converted try.

Trailing 12-0 going into the second half, but that proved to be a much more open affair.

Rangers jumped into an 18-point lead with a converted try two minutes after the break.

However, this stung the Saints into life with Sam Cummins and Jordan Colgon scoring tries and Nick Mitchell converting one of the touchdowns.

Unfortunately eight points was as close as Joes would come to Brighouse.

The final 10 minutes saw four tries scored, two for each team – both of Brighouse’s were converted.

Liam Donlan and Jason Muldoon crossed for Joes, with Darren Kelly converting one of the scores.

Saints coach Simon Hagger took some positives from the loss and was sure with a bit more composure in attack and communication in defence the loss would have been a win.

With several new players still to come into the team St Joseph’s are looking forwards to a successful season despite the opening day loss.

Man of the match for St Joseph’s was scrum half Darren Kelly.

Moldgreen’s Under 14 side went into their game with it all to do against Dewsbury Moor, who are two divisions above them, but won 18-10.

And if that wasn’t enough the side Moldgreen put out had six players unavailable and had to play part of the second half with 12 men on the field.

From start to finish the Moldgreen boys were up for the challenge with Dewsbury Moor having to defend their own line for most of the first quarter of the game – due to the good work of the visiting the forwards and some excellent kicking from Danny Flanagan.

But it was Dewsbury Moor who scored first with a converted try and goal, but Moldgreen didn’t let their heads drop and an excellent move saw Sam Pegg put Reece Boxall-Hunt in for a try on 18 minutes – converted by Flanagan.

Going towards half time on level terms, Moldgreen’s heads were up and in the 39th minute Pegg put Boxall-Hunt in and the try was converted by Flanagan.

Moor then hit back with a try but failed with the conversion to make for a tense last 10 minutes with the score at 12-10 to Moldgreen.

It was end-to-end stuff, but it was Connor Paga that sealed the game with a well-deserved try – converted by Flanagan – on 58 minutes.

The Moldgreen coaches awarded the whole team man of the match, but there were excellent performances from Callum Martin, Austin Briggs, Joslin Landu, Nick Hanson, Pegg and Boxall-Hunt.
