BRIGHOUSE Rangers suffered the agony of a narrow knockout defeat as they went down 20-12 in the Under 14 Yorkshire Cup.

After an unbeaten start to their league campaign, Rangers came up against an Oulton side who put them under pressure from the start.

Despite Rangers defending well, Oulton gained the ascendancy, but Brighouse ensured they remained in the hunt with Ethan Salm going in for a try just before half-time and Jamie Greenwood adding the goal.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Oulton attacking but hitting a resolute rangers defence and strong runs from Troy Ambler, Ronan Costello, Sheldon McFadden, Alex Tankard and Will Perfitt kept Brighouse in the contest.

Oulton scored but Greenwood fashioned another Rangers try as he collected his own kick through and put the ball out to Costello, who was not going to be stopped as he powered over the line with four defenders hanging onto him.

Greenwood added the goal and Rangers hoped to stage a comeback but ran out of time.

The man-of-the-match award, picked by the opposition, went to Ethan Salm.
