All those with a past or present link to Huddersfield amateur rugby league are being invited to a special event to raise cash for the family of the late Andy Bessell.

The 28-year-old died in a road traffic accident in Honley in February.

The popular all-round sportsman played rugby league at Lindley Swifts, Moldgreen and Slaithwaite Saracens.

As a result, the town’s amateur RL community have come together to organise an event in his honour at Deighton WMC on Friday, May 1 (7pm).

Tickets to the event are £5, with a raffle and auction of top RL memorabilia up for grabs.

The event has been organised by Kevin Bower and Ritchie Hawkyard, who became good friends of Andy during his time at Lindley and Slaithwaite respectively, with Bower confident there will be a positive turn-out on the night.

“Andy was a great guy, and this is our chance to give something back to the Bessell family,” he said.

“We expect the event to prove very popular, particularly as we’ve got some great pieces of RL memorabilia up for grabs.

“But it’s also the chance for the Huddersfield amateur rugby league community to come together and do something in honour of such a popular person.”
