Lindley Swifts will be fielding a ladies team for the 2015-16 season.

The Huddersfield-based club has stepped in to take charge of the former Brighouse ARLFC Women’s Rugby League side, who were looking for a new home.

The team already has 25 players on their books, as well as several sponsors, with the whole Lindley Swifts club (both open age and junior section) and the committee at Birchencliffe Cricket Club – their new base – welcoming them with open arms.

Chairman of the Lindley Swifts ladies section will be Lance Gilbert, whose daughter Amy was a key member of Brighouse Ladies and is one of those who has made the Lindley switch.

And he feels the move could be the best thing to happen for ladies rugby league in the area.

“As soon as it was announced there would be a ladies team at Lindley Swifts, interest has grown and grown, with several players from other clubs expressing a desire to come here,” said Gilbert.

“The Swifts deal was sealed when we were invited to the club’s fundraising day in memory of former Swifts stalwart Andrew ‘Taz’ Cole, who was tragically killed in an accident at work a few years ago.

“Lindley looked after us all day, with some great activities on show and several friendly junior games taking place between Swifts, Slaithwaite and Newsome. There was also a memorial game between Lindley Swifts current side and past Lindley players.

“It was a brilliant way to start our time at our new home.”
