A tight encounter between Newsome Panthers Under 13 side and Oulton Vikings ended with the Panthers snatching victory 28-26 to go through to the last eight of the Yorkshire Junior Challenge Cup.

The home side fought back after conceding three early tries, with a treble of their own as the first half ended with Oulton two points ahead.

Daniel Jessop, Billy Denton and Leighton Davis scored Newsome’s first half tries and the Panthers took the momentum into the second half with a fine try from Joe Hughes.

Three minutes later Jessop went over for his second and Travis Corion scored the final Panthers try with seven minutes remaining.

Hughes kicked two goals and earned the opposition’s man of the match award, while the coach’s award went to Billy Haywood, top tackler was Aaron Reid and parents’ player went to Thomas Spiliotis.

Panthers’ Under 14 side also enjoyed cup success beating Milford Marlins 28-14 in the Challenge Cup preliminary round.

In atrocious conditions the home team went ahead after five minutes with a try from Luke Hanson. Further tries from the Senior twins followed before Milford had a player sin-binned for a foul on Luke Duval after he made a good break down the field and the home side led 18-0 at half-time.

The Panthers were penalised from the restart when the ball was blown into the referee in the 10 metre area and by the time the Newsome boys had finished discussing the referee’s penalty decision, the visitors had scored their first try.

The try of the match came when wingman Kahyam Crampton scored his first try for the club with a superb run from halfway staying tight to the wing to touchdown.

The Marlins scored two late tries before Duval made the game safe for the Panthers.

Two conversions each were added by Jasper McGuire and Joel Sykes.

The whole team were awarded ‘men of the match’ for a good team performance.

Newsome Panthers B Under 8 faced Ovenden in their first home game of the season.

Ovenden scored two quick tries, but Panthers fought back with Marley Myers scoring.

Ovenden extended their lead, but Newsome closed the gap with tries from Demir Acarer and Myers.

In the second half Ovenden kept their noses in front but there were further Newsome tries from Cameron Penrose and man of the match Myers – Max Fleary and Acarer were joint top tacklers.

Panthers Under 9 side were away at Meltham All Blacks looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat .

Newsome started well as Ryan Kirrane-Perrin and Louie Creaser put Ethan Buckley in for the opening scoring .

Meltham replied but Creaser found Buckley to go over and despite Meltham getting two tries without reply, Newsome were working hard in defence.

The All Blacks had the perfect start to the second period scoring an early try but Mckenzie’s smart off-load put Buckley in for his hat trick and Panthers added a further try through Kirrane- Perrin.

Man of match went to Connor Emerson, parents’ man of match and opposition’s award to Buckley, and top tackler and most improvedto Malachi Menzie and magic moment to Dylan Sykes
