NEWSOME Panthers Under 12 side notched an impressive 42-16 win away at Ovenden.

Newsome had players back from injuries for the Yorkshire Junior League Division III clash and were almost at full strength.

Excellent distribution from hooker Bryn Peel enabled props Thomas Spiliotis and Scott Moorhouse to make some strong runs to build a solid platform for the backs.

Industrious stand off Billy Denton, who was named man-of-the-match, and scrum half Henry Barton were also in great form and Barton scored Panthers’ first converted try in the fourth minute.

Leighton Davis, named trainer of the week, was proving a handful for the Ovenden defence and he went over for Newsome’s second converted try.

The Panthers notched their third touchdown when Joe Hughes, the opposition’s man-of-the-match, fed the ball to Aaron Reid who, in turn, found winger Wesley McGuire for him to go over, and Barton weaved through for his second try just before half-time.

The second half started well for the visitors with Jamie Lynch forcing an error from Ovenden and Hughes went over for the first of his two tries.

The hosts then started to apply more pressure and Ovenden went in for their second try.

However, the outstanding Billy Haywood, the top tackler and parents’ player, marshalled the Panthers defence well before combining brilliantly with Billy Denton, who went in for the visitors’ sixth converted try.

Travis Corion earned the grafter award in his first match for Newsome, who made changes with Caleb Dennis and Allan Karrasch in the closing stages.

The visitors were now dominating the contest and added two more tries through Hughes and Haywood.
