Newsome Panthers’ Under 14 side were in uncompromising form as they won 44-4 away at Hull Wyke.

Panthers took just five minutes to get on the board when Louis Senior touched down a loose ball near the flag.

The second try came following a scrum deep in the Newsome half when the ball was moved to centre Joey Gatus who ran mnost of the length of the field to score near the corner flag.

This was quickly followed by full back Harry Newman making a break and bursting over and with ten minutes of the game gone and three tries already behind the Hull boys finally started playing and only great defensive work kept the home team to one score on the stroke of half-time.

Wyke started strongly in the second half and had all the early attacking chances, but their heads went down when stand off Joel Sykes cheekily intercepted a pass two metres from his own line and just managed to beat the chasers to go over again near the corner flag.

Attacking flair and audacious passing saw Newman and Gatus both completing hat tricks and the final points were scored by hooker Jordan James who went over on the last play of the game.

Opposition’s man-of-the-match was given to Harry Newman, who added four conversions.

Newsome’s award went to Joey Gatus who, as well as three tries, was joint top tackler.

The Newsome team are now only one win away from securing second position in the league and promotion to the top division.

At Under 13 level Newsome were beaten 22-20 at home by Guiseley Rangers.

Newsome kicked off with Billy Haywood’s kick forcing the visitors to knock on close to their own line.

From a rehearsed attacking move with the ball going from hooker Bryn Peel to captain Joe Hughes, who dummied his way through the defenders and went over for the host’s first unconverted try.

The Newsome boys began to dominate the middle of the field with props Thomas Spiliotis and Scott Moorhouse running the ball hard at the Guiseley defence, while Billy Denton and Ben Holmes were combining well to move the ball across the field, with good runs from Jamie Lynch and Scott Dearnley.

On the 10 minutes Haywood received the ball from Joe Hughes, took the defence on and at Guiseley’s 10 m line passed to Spiliotis who powered over the Guiseley defenders for Newsome’s second unconverted score. Henry Barton came in at hooker and his quick runs and quick ball handling caused Guiseley major problems, while Aaron Reid and Daniel Jessop were stopping any attacking move down the side with some strong tackling, matched on the opposite side by Leighton Davis and Rico White.

Davis was proving extremely difficult to handle for Guiseley and in three minutes managed to go over twice through some great runs through defenders and with both tries unconverted Newsome were 16-0 up at half-time.

The second half started with a determined Guiseley outfit combining well to go over with the first two minutes of the game.

Prop Malachi Taylor-David was running strongly against the Guiseley players along with Lynch trying to regain some of the momentum.

Newsome scored their fifth try of the game through a move involving Haywood again running at the defenders and passing to Spiliotis who crashed over for his second score of the game.

A string of handling errors then proved fatal for the home side and allowed Guiseley to build momentum and score a further three tries.

Another close game and five tries for Newsome to the opposition’s four should have clinched the game for the Panthers.

Parents Player was awarded to Haywood, grafter went to Moorhouse, Reid was Top Tackler and coach’s man-of-the-match was awarded to Spiliotis.
