Newsome Panthers bounced back from last week’s defeat at St Joseph’s with a 16-9 hard-fought home Pennine League Championship I triumph over another Huddersfield side in Lindley Swifts.

The hosts made a slow start to the contest and were 8-0 behind at the break.

And when the Swifts extended their lead with an early second-half drop goal, it looked like it could prove a frustrating days for the Panthers.

But with man-of-the-match Alex Chatterton leading the way, Newsome finally clicked into gear, grabbing tries through Andrew Dickinson, Dom Newton and Josh Cuttell, and two Luke Brewster goals to seal a victory in which Jebel Ceesay was solid on debut.

It was also a very good day for in-form Underbank Rangers, who maintained their Second Division title challenge with a thrilling 26-21 home triumph over leaders Stainland Stags.

The win for second-placed Rangers was only secured in the 77th minute Jack Wilson when dived over in the corner for his first senior try, with Oliver Moorhouse putting the icing on the cake with a very late penalty to maintain Bank’s 100% home record.

The early signs didn’t look promising as the Stags opened the scoring after four minutes.

But by half-time, the hosts had opened up a promising 16-4 lead.

Captain Martin Wilson opened his side’s scoring with a great solo try, converted by Moorhouse, and then great play from Morgan Blakely and Steve Berry enabled Tom Stringer to cross and make it 10-4.

A bumper crowd had now come to life to show their support for the home team, and giant Underbank prop Darren Southwell showed great footballing skills to kick the ball forward and calmly jog after it and touch down in the 27th minute to complete the first-half scoring.

But in what proved to be a roller-coaster ride of a second half, the visitors had drawn level by the 53rd minutes.

With Moorhouse and Blakely proving an inspiration, Underbank regrouped and Steve Woodcock burst through in the corner to make it 20-16.

But in the 68th minute Stainland responded again with an unconverted try and then landed a drop goal with five minutes remaining to edge 21-20 ahead.

At that point, it looked all over for Underbank.

But in an amazing finale, Wilson dived over with three minutes remainining before Moorhouse slotted over the clinching penalty.

Unfortunately, there was a 26-18 defeat for Meltham All Blacks in their final home League game of the season against second-placed Division IV side Whinmoor.

But the home side could count themselves unlucky they were unable to take the honours.

Meltham took the lead through a Ben Moorhouse try, converted by Josh Worrall who then converted his own try, and it looked like it could be the All Blacks’ day.

Whinmoor, however, had other ideas and took a 22-12 lead before Meltham hit back with a Ryan White try again converted by Worrall kept the contest alive.

But in the closing stages Whinmoor scored again to make the game safe.

At the same time, it was good news for Division IV rivals Emley Moor, who secured a 40-32 home win over West Bowling A.
