Meltham All Blacks have recorded their most significant victory of the season.

A hard-fought 12-10 triumph over second-placed Worth Village means the third-placed All Blacks are now at the heart of the Pennine League Division VI West title race.

If Meltham win their game in hand over Worth Village they’ll move level on points, while winning their two games in hand on leaders Victoria Rangers A will take them joint top.

But the Huddersfield side were forced to dig deep to maintain their unbeaten record with their narrow win over Keighley-based Worth.

Playing downhill in the first half, the hosts took the lead when a long ball from Steve Farrell found Harvey Hindle, and with just the opposite winger to beat he stepped inside to put the ball down over the line,

The rest of the half was a midfield battle, with handling errors in almost every set.

Worth scrambled a try in the corner to open their account, but in the next set a Meltham kick was dropped by the visitors’ full-back and David Roebuck pounced on the ball to make it 12-6 at the break.

The second half was a real scrappy affair as the conditions began to take there toll.

And with the All Blacks playing most of the half with 12 men due to injuries, they were forced to defend as if there lives depended on it, keeping Worth out until the 78th minute to reduce the lead to two points.

But Meltham hung on for a great victory, with Josh Worrall and Andy Farrell adding a conversion, while the Little Badger Cider Company man-of-the-match was Paul Carmody.

There was also a great win for Emley Moor, who secured a 22-8 home triumph over Division IV mid-table rivals Dearne Valley Bulldogs, but Division V side Slaithwaite Saracens went down 32-16 at Hanging Heaton.

All the other fixtures involving Huddersfield clubs fell victim to the latest icy blast.
