FROM the comments I made in the press in the immediate wake of our defeat against St Helens on Sunday, I'm sure you would all realise how upset I felt.

It's now four days later, and I'm still feeling upset!

In the post-match press conference, I made it clear how angry I was over Jon Wilkin's late challenge on Chris Thorman and then the video referee's decision to disallow Eorl Crabtree's 'try'.

I've now been able to review the incidents on video, and nothing has changed. I'm still angry.

For the challenge on Chris, the match referee and his touchjudges were perfectly placed to see Jon jump in to the challenge and catch our captain extremely late around the head after he had kicked the ball away.

As a result, Chris could play no further part in the contest. He hadn't got a clue where he was.

So why none of the match officials could see what had happened is totally beyond me.

OK, Jon got a spell in the sin-bin.

But 10 minutes later, he was running around on the field again, with little disruption to the Saints' formation.

Yet we lost our captain and one of our main playmakers for the rest of the game.

Clearly, we were the ones who suffered, and why Jon didn't receive an automatic red card is mystifying in the extreme.

And if that wasn't bad enough, we were then denied a clear-cut try.

I've watched Eorl going for the tryline over and over and over again, and it's pretty clear he placed the ball on the line, with the momentum with him. He then let go under the weight of the defenders around him.

I've now spoken at length with Stuart Cummings (the referees' controller) over this issue - along with a page full of other incidents that caused me some concern! - and he has told me the try was ruled out because Eorl lost the ball.

I begged to differ.

Obviously, the video referee appointed was a certain Steve Ganson from St Helens, and the club had already made public our disappointment on this matter before the game took place.

I don't blame Steve for this. In fact, I thought it was unfair to put him in such a difficult position.

We did voice our fears over how much controversy there may be if he was forced to make a tough and crucial decision - and that's exactly what happened.

It proved another big talking point on a day of controversy.

Let's hope all the talk in the months ahead is about the quality of the rugby, and a successful season for the Giants!
