Underbank Rangers succeeded in producing a second 11-try victory in successive games as they put Cumbrian rivals Millom to the sword 62-0 at home.

The triumph lifted Rangers to fifth in the National Conference Division One table as they maintained an impressive run of form.

This comfortable victory followed on the back of a similar result 10 days earlier when Rangers were dominant in a 60-4 11-try rout of neighbours Elland.

While Millom put in plenty of effort, they were totally out-gunned by a rampant Rangers side.

Man-of-the-match was loose forward Caldon Bravo, who had his best game in Underbank colours since joining in 2016.

However, he was pushed hard for the accolade by the outstanding duo of front rower Craig Williams, playing his one 100th game for Underbank, and Australian half back Chris Druett, who was playing his final game before returning home.

The big win greatly improved Underbank’s points difference with the home side scoring six tries and Luke Pogson added five conversions in the first half to open up a 34-0 half-time lead.

However, a string of handling errors limited their chances of matching that in the second half when they added a further five touchdowns, plus four more Pogson goals against a team second bottom in the competition with just two wins and four points – and who look like they are preparing for life in Division Two in 2017.

Underbank also had the satisfaction of ‘nilling’ their opponents as they repelled all that Millom could throw at them.

Skipper Kris Harrop returned from illness at full-back allowing Tom Eidson to return to left centre for Dom Horn, who was one of the replacements.

Druett returned from a shoulder injury at stand off for the injured Josh Dixon, while Dave Valentine, Stephen Berry and Andy Boothroyd were unavailable and were replaced by Lewis Peet and Mikey Holmes in the 17-man squad.

The opening exchanges were fairly even and well contested, but once Underbank opened the scoring after 17 minutes it was just a matter of how many.

Harrop strated the ball rolling racing through a gap to dash 30 metres to score, and just four minutes later after Millom conceded back-to-back penalties, Druett spotted a gap to step through.

Those two great individual tries were then followed by a classic team score as Alex Chatterton sent away his winger Courtney Allettte on a powerful run, and just as he was tackled he handed onto the supporting Bravo who raced in for the try.

It was one-way traffic at this point and back row forward Tom Stringer was next to profit from the home side’s dominance as he climbed high to take Pogson’s bomb and crash over on 29 minutes and give the home side a 22-0 lead.

If in any doubt the win was settled with two further tries in three minutes just before the break as replacement centre Horn bustled over followed on the next set as Williams broke the defence up the middle with a strong surge, and then Eidson found Michael Murphy on his shoulder for the veteran back rower to race over for a try to send Rangers into the break with a deserved 34-0 lead.

The scoring pattern was resumed almost immediately in the second half as Chatterton opened up Millom’s left side for Allette to grab a try in the corner.

Replacement Mikey Holmes then sold an outrageous dummy and went through a big hole to score his first try for the club under the black dot.

The game then became scrappy, but Millom enjoyed some field position with back rowers Paul Carter and Ethan Kelly to fore with Kelly unfortunate to score as he was adjudged to be held-up over the line.

However, normal service was resumed in the final quarter as first Jayden Covell-Wood got on the end of a sweeping cross field passing move to cross on 60 minutes.

Silky skills from Druett then opened a huge gap and he passed to his half back partner Pogson to score and then in the final minute Horn completed his brace in similar style to his first score.

Pogson kicked nine conversions including some fine shots from wide out.

Bravo picked up the Bengal Spice Man of the Match award, and also in the running were the industrious Williams and the ever creative Druett who won the Rose and Crown Players’ Player. Underbank’s next outing will be at home next weekend to East Leeds on Saturday (2.30pm).
