Danny Brough will lead Scotland into World Cup battle tonight aiming to provide the same level of inspiration that earned him the Super League Man of Steel with the Giants.

The 30-year-old goalkicking half-back was at the heart of the Giants’ first top-of-the-table finish in 81 years.

He now turns his attention to helping Scotland push for a World Cup quarter-final spot against a Tonga side including Huddersfield teammate Ukuma Ta’ai at Workington’s Derwent Park (8.00).

And he’s confident the Scots – with former Giants teammate The 30-year-old goalkicking half-back was at the heart of the Giants’ first top-of-the-table finish in 81 years (Bradford) also in the side –  can get off to a winning start.

“To captain any team is a big honour but to captain your country is extra special and it’s something I’m looking forward to,” said the Dewsbury-born Brough, whose grandfather was born in Aberdeen.

“I think being captain at the Giants has taken my game to a different level and I hope my form can continue.

“We’ve got a good blend, a mix of known and unknown players, and that’s good because it makes you quite unpredictable and not easy to read.

“I think we can use that to our advantage. We’re also a tight-knit group and we sing the national anthem without music as well, so it’s good and everybody gets on board. It fires you up before a game, which is certainly the plan against Tonga tonight.

“We obviously know it’s going to be tough to progress to the quarter-finals, but it’s definitely our intention to get there. We’ve got little to lose trying.”
