BACK-IN-FORM Huddersfield put their nightmare May behind them to get their Super League campaign explosively back on track.

An almost perfect opening 40 minutes laid the foundation for a stunning triumph as the Giants ended a run of four successive defeats in the most emphatic of fashion.

With captain Brett Hodgson pulling the strings from the off, it wasn’t long before the visitors were in complete control.

While Bradford looked tired after their bruising Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat to Warrington, Huddersfield looked as if the week off had done them a power of good.

Besides the attacking influence of Hodgson, Eorl Crabtree’s omission from the England Test side picked by Bulls boss Steve McNamara brought the best out of him as he led the forward charge by example.

And out wide Jermaine McGillvary couldn’t have asked for a better Super League debut as he crossed for two well-created first-half scores.

His second try after 30 minutes came on the back of a completely one-sided opening as the Giants raced into a 28-0 lead.

By the fifth minute Huddersfield had hit the front with their opening score and the tone for the afternoon had been set.

Man of Steel Hodgson was inevitably the provider, dabbing the ball ahead for Lee Gilmour to follow up and touch down against his former club.

Hodgson converted and the men from the Galpharm were on their way.

Their second try came 10 minutes later when Hodgson’s bomb was collected by Rikki Sheriffe and Michael Lawrence immediately trapped him in the in-goal area.

From the Bulls’ drop-out, the Giants went straight back on the attack, with Brett Hodgson, Kevin Brown and Crabtree keeping the ball alive for Danny Brough’s long pass to put David Hodgson in at the corner.

On this occasion Brett Hodgson couldn’t convert, but he made no mistake with his next three efforts wide on the right.

Try No3 came in the 18th minute when Leroy Cudjoe’s perfectly-timed short pass put McGillvary over for his first try at this level.

Then four minutes later, Brown broke clear on halfway and raced away before feeding Cudjoe to finish off.

And the one-way traffic continued on the half hour when talented young winger McGillvary pounced on Brett Hodgson’s kick to the corner to touch down.

It took Bradford 36 minutes to make any impression on the Huddersfield line when Paul Sykes lost the ball attempting to score.

But, not surprisingly, it was the visitors who finished the half the stronger, with fit-again David Fa’alogo only just failing to gather Brough’s high kick to score.

With the rain starting to fall at the start of the second half, handling became a problem for both sides.

As a result, it took the Giants 15 minutes to extend their advantage with a try which summed up the Bulls’ day.

A high Brough bomb was allowed to bounce by full-back Dave Halley and it deflected straight into the posts and into the grateful arms of Luke Robinson to score the easiest try of his career.

Brett Hodgson again goaled, and any hopes of a stunning Bradford second-half revival were thankfully over.

Lawrence just lost the ball attempting to touch down after 59 minutes, but there was no denying the brilliant Brett Hodgson five minutes later when the ball was swept out wide for the full-back to collect and dummy over with the greatest of ease.

His conversion made it 40-0.

Bradford finally got off the mark with 10 minutes remaining when Heath L’Estrange’s pass back on the inside gave Steve Menzies’ a walk-in and Paul Sykes converted.

But that just prompted the Giants to step up a gear and, within minutes, Darrell Griffin plunged over by the posts for his first try of the season, with Hodgson again converting to restore the 40-point advantage.

In the closing moments, Huddersfield were twice forced to drop-out under their own posts.

Larne Patrick looked an odds-on scorer until he was caught late by a Halley high shot.

But it only delayed the inevitable as Brett Hodgson’s long pass gave namesake David just enough space to touch down in the corner and bring up the half-century.

Hodgson’s eighth goal made the final margin of victory a staggering 46 points and helped secure an excellent Giants double over the Bulls, as well as proving Huddersfield are back!
