Stand-in head coach Andy Kelly believes he’s leaving the Huddersfield Giants in good shape.

Huddersfield’s Head of Youth performance watched his side suffer a 20-19 Super League defeat at Hull KR on Friday night and then jetted off to Australia as head coach of England Academy for their month-long Test series.

In Kelly’s absence, former Giants captain Chris Thorman is taking temporary control, with recently-retired Giants star Luke Robinson lending him assistance.

But even though it’s the first time the duo will have taken sole charge of a Super League squad, Kelly is confident they will do a good job – and wouldn’t be at all surprised if they plotted St Helens’ downfall in Sunday’s Super League clash at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“I’ve gone to Australia knowing things are in good order,” said Kelly, whose club’s place in the Middle 8s was confirmed with the defeat at the Robins.

“Although things weren’t good in the second half at Hull KR, we’re still in a better position than we have been for some time, in terms of the trust and respect we have in each other.

“I’ve no doubt that everyone will bounce straight back and we’ll be okay by the time St Helens get to us, particularly with Chris and Luke working together.”
