A PLACE in Huddersfield Giants' squad for Sunday's big Super League opener against Castleford Tigers at the McAlpine (3.00) is up for grabs tonight.
Academy coach Lee St Hilaire's side play a pre-season clash against Bradford Bulls at the Bradford and Bingley RU ground at Wagon Lane (7.30).
Head coach Jon Sharp is close to finalising his line-up for Sunday's big top-flight clash.
But he has told all those in action tonight that one place will remain open, and he will base his selection on tonight's match.
Included in the Academy side are Super League squad men Ben Feehan, Phil Joseph, Matthew Whittaker and Paul Smith.
And Sharp will be looking to them to lead by example.
"First, I want to see how they react to having to play in this match after spending all winter with the first-team squad," said Sharp.
"I expect them to react positively, particularly as they know a Super League spot could be their reward.
"There is certainly a fair bit at stake for those in action."
Bradford are also expected to include several fringe first-teamers, including forwards Richard Moore and Vinny Myler.
Others included in the Giants' side tonight are top young half-backs Thomas Heimngway and Paul Mennell, while St Hilaire hands a trial to Huddersfield University player Neil Hutchinson.
This will be the Academy's only warm-up game ahead of their opening grading fixture against Wigan at Huddersfield YMCA on Saturday, February 28 (2.30).
They then follow up with another match at Laund Hill against St Helens on March 6, before visiting Wakefield on March 13 and moving on to Wigan on March 27.
Where the Giants finish in this tough four-club pool will determine which Academy competition they play in this season.
The top two will be in the Academy Championship, with the other two competing in the First Division.
