HUDDERSFIELD Giants' Junior Academy side maintained their First Division title challenge with a 36-16 victory over Hull KR at Laund Hill.

It was a win which kept them hot on the heels of unbeaten leaders Warrington, who are two points clear, while helping open up a five-point gap on third-placed Salford.

The Giants got off to the perfect start with a try from Marcus George after two minutes, converted by Richard Knight.

But the game was still in the balance at half-time as they were only 10-8 ahead, with Ben Clare having added the Giants' second.

In the second half, however, it was a totally different story.

Huddersfield increased their lead within a minute of the restart with a converted score from Glen Holdsworth, and the Giants were in complete control.

Three minutes later Knight crossed for a try after good work from Paul Mennell and followed up with a penalty to make it 22-8 after 50 minutes.

Mennell was again at the heart of the next try as Clare grabbed a second, which Knight converted, in the 53rd minute, and the game was already beyond the visitors.

Hull KR did manage three late tries to give the final score a closer look.

But winger Luke George was still on hand to score a late Giants try to underline the home side's dominance.
