Brett Ferres is confident the pain of the Huddersfield Giants’ opening-day defeat to Hull FC will act as a massive source of motivation for tomorrow’s Super League XX trip to Wigan Warriors.

The Huddersfield vice captain has revealed the nature of the 19-0 home loss to the Black and Whites has hit the entire squad hard.

And the England back-row forward admits avoiding something similar at the DW Stadium will be an extra spur as the Giants look to open their 2015 account at the second time of asking.

“The feeling straight after the Hull game was really down,” said Ferres.

“Over the past few years we’ve started the new season on a massive high, with opening-day wins at Wigan and St Helens.

“So to lose this time around, when the expectations were so high, is incredibly tough to take.

Throughout pre-season everything is geared towards what you do in the opening game. It’s what you work towards for month after month, when you’re flogged to death all day long.

“So when this day finally comes around and you come up with the sort of performance we did, it’s very hard to take.

“The only way you can try and get this feeling out of your system is make sure you carry on working as hard as you possibly can and come up with the right sort of performance in your next match.

“That’s what we’re desperate to do at Wigan tomorrow night.”
