It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Huddersfield Giants could retain the Super League Leaders’ Shield!

With four games of the regular season remaining, coach Paul Anderson’s sixth-placed side are four points behind leaders St Helens, two adrift of Wigan Warriors, Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers and level on points with Warrington Wolves.

And with the Giants seven points clear of Catalan Dragons and Widnes Vikings, in seventh and eighth, a big battle is about to erupt to determine the top-six finishing positions.

Huddersfield will obviously need to win all four of their games – at home to Widnes, Hull and St Helens, and away to Warrington – and then hope a number of results from other fixtures go their way if they are to finish top for a second successive season.

But those other fixtures do offer genuine hope, with many of the clubs above them having to play each other before the season’s end.

Between now and the end of the regular season, there’s Warrington v Castleford, Leeds v St Helens, St Helens v Warrington and Wigan v Leeds – that’s four games when teams above the Giants go head-to-head.

It’s clear, therefore, that a lot could change between now and the start of the play-off campaign in mid-September.

And that’s not a fact lost on Giants chief Anderson.

“With the fixtures that are left it can all even itself out,” said Anderson.

“To be honest, we haven’t taken that close a look at who plays who between now and the end of the season, but we obviously know we’ve got to play Warrington and St Helens, who are both above us, as well as Widnes and Hull.

“So we know we’ve got some massive games ahead of us, and ones that give us the chance to get even higher up the table, which is ultimately the aim.

“And who knows where that could leave us if we win all four games.

“Something we have done as a coaching group this week is taken a look at what points got you where in last year’s final table.

“For a start, a total of 31 got you fourth, and at the moment we’re sat on 30 with four games remaining.

“And if we do win our last four games we’d be only two points off where we were last season when we finished top, so we’re not doing too badly.

“We know other fixtures will have a massive say in determining exactly where we finish, and last week was one when we were able to take full advantage of some of the other results.

“As well as producing our best 40 minutes of the season to help us win at Wakefield, there were defeats for Leeds and St Helens.

“All being well, that’s a trend that’ll continue over the next month or so.

“But whatever happens, we know that at this stage there’s everything to play for.”
