Vastly-experienced David Faiumu believes the Huddersfield Giants are losing games in their head.

And the former Australian NRL Grand Finalist knows that if they show the right mental attitude in Sunday’s home Challenge Cup clash against unbeaten St Helens, a morale-boosting victory will be achieved.

While former Giants coach Nathan Brown’s Saints are unbeaten at the top of the Super League table with seven wins out of seven, 2013 table-toppers Huddersfield have made a stuttering start, having won two and drawn two of their opening seven games.

As a result, the visitors are hotly-tipped to progress to the fifth round.

But Faiumu knows that’s far from being a foregone conclusion.

“The opening rounds have been tough,” admitted the 30-year-old former New Zealand Test utility forward, who played for the North Queensland Cowboys in their 2005 Grand Final defeat to Wests Tigers.

“But it’s early days, and we know we’re still good enough to bounce back and have a major say this season.

“It’s clear a lot of us in the team, myself included, are not turning up and doing our roles to the best of our ability. That’s a mental thing.

“We need to get back to focusing 100% on our own games and making sure we do that for the benefit of the team.

“If we do that, then we know everything will fall back into place and the wins will start coming regularly once again.

“In fact, if we put things right straight away we’ll beat Saints this weekend.”
