GIANTS' Australian Test star Michael De Vere has warned his teammates they must improve out of all recognition against St Helens at the Galpharm tomorrow (3.00) - or suffer the consequences!

The former Brisbane Broncos superstar admitted he was bitterly disappointed with Huddersfield's performance at Bradford Bulls when the Giants were heavily beaten 54-10.

And the 28-year-old, who has now recovered from a bout of flu which affected his contribition at Odsal, fears the worst if his side don't re-produce the form which brought them the magnificent victory over Wigan the week before.

"Tomorrow, we're at home to Saints and then we're at Leeds," said De Vere.

"We obviously need to be at our best in these games or else they'll punish us like the Bulls did.

"So, it's important we learn the lessons from the Bradford defeat.

"I don't think we were there mentally, and possibly we were a bit complacent, whereas Bradford were ready to play from the start.

"They are a good side, are hard to stop and had two tries on the board very quickly. They almost immediately had the momentum with them."

De Vere had the chance to cut the deficit in the first half when the Giants were just 8-0 behind.

But he admitted that he was denied by an excellent piece of full-back play by Michael Withers.

"I very nearly scored, but the ball was knocked out as I caught it," he added.

"That seemed to be one of the stories of the game. When we got to their end, we had some near misses."
