GIANTS' chairman Ken Davy today admitted all the gloss was taken off yesterday's 50-16 Cup victory over Pia by the size of the McAlpine crowd and he has questioned the town's commitment to his Super League club.

The Huddersfield supremo says he felt totally embarrassed that just 1,392 fans watched Huddersfield's 10-try triumph over the top French side as the Giants' booked their place in tonight's fifth round draw.

The fact Challenge Cup clashes are all-pay meant attendances across the board were well down on Super League figures.

But when Castleford were able to attract over 3,500 for their tie against another French club, UTC, Giants chairman Davy admitted he felt bitterly disappointed.

"While we were all delighted by yesterday's result and look forward to tonight's draw I feel I must express my bitter disappointment at the size of the crowd," he said.

"In fact, I will go to the point of saying I was personally embarrassed by the low numbers when we were supposed to be entertaining a team from France.

"I know we were expected to win comfortably and Pia didn't bring any of their own supporters.

"But I was really upset that we couldn't put on a better show for them, and I again wonder whether Huddersfield really does want a Super League team.

"We were determined to do our best to entertain a visiting team, but I felt in some respects we let them down badly.

"I am happy to say that the attendance for our Super League opener against Castleford the week before was incredibly encouraging because we had the backing of over 4,000 Giants fans.

"But if we are to continue to progress these numbers have to be increased, and our goals certainly cannot be achieved on the back of such low attendances as yesterday's."

Meanwhile, Giants coach Jon Sharp is keeping his fingers crossed his club will be handed another favourable tie in tonight's fifth-round draw to be broadcast live on BBC Radio Five Live at around 7.30pm.

Several Super League sides are out already, including holders Bradford Bulls and Widnes Vikings, who the Giants visit in the top flight on Friday night (8.00).

Sharp wants to avoid the remaining big guns and said: "It goes without saying we would like an easier draw, and ideally at the McAlpine."
