Bitterly disappointed coach Paul Anderson has conceded it was a point lost rather than a point gained as the Giants were held 22-22 by Catalans Dragons in a dramatic Magic Weekend clash at Newcastle’s St James Park.

Huddersfield needed a last-play touchline conversion from skipper Danny Brough to share the Super League spoils with the men from the South of France.

But with the Giants seemingly cruising to victory early in the second half after building up a thoroughly-deserved 16-0 lead, Anderson admitted the final 30 minutes were totally unacceptable.

“If anyone was going to nail that touchline conversion it was going to be Broughy,” said Anderson.

“But there’s no way it should have come to that.

“We did a lot things right in the first half and at the start of the second, and that’s why we were 16-0 up. In fact, I don’t know why the lead wasn’t greater, because I don’t understand why the video referee ruled Joe Wardle had shoulder-charged Morgan Escare in the try Scott Grix had disallowed.

“Having said that, that doesn’t excuse what happened in that second half, which I thought was absolutely pathetic from us.

“I know Catalans had something to say about that, but we were awful.

“So even though Broughy got us a point in the end, it has to be a point lost rather than a point gained.”

Anderson has also revealed his medical team are running test on the right-knee injury picked by England back-row forward Brett Ferres in the 16th minute.

“Brett left the ground on crutches and we’re running the usual checks to determine the full extent of the damage,” added the head coach.

“Hopefully, he’s just twisted the knee ligaments, which means he should be out for only a maximum of a couple of weeks.”
