TWO former Huddersfield Giants head coaches have been linked to the vacant job at Castleford Tigers.

John Kear, pictured top, and Malcolm Reilly, bottom, have emerged as the frontrunners - along with Widnes boss Neil Kelly - to take over at the struggling Super League club following the sacking of Graham Steadman.

The 42-year-old Steadman has paid the ultimate price for the Tigers' poor start to the campign, which has seen them lose all seven of their opening top-flight clashes this term.

In Steadman's absence, training at The Jungle is being taken by assistant coach Gary Mercer, who is also at the heart of head coach speculation right now.

The New Zealander is expected to emerge as the top target at Halifax following that club's decision to sack Tony Anderson.

That follows the relegated Super League side's poor shaky start to their National League campaign.
