FORMER Wakefield favourite Scott Grix is determined to make sure the Giants don’t fall into the same trap as last season.

Huddersfield were guilty on several occasions in 2011 of failing to back up one quality performance with another.

It’s something the Giants are keen to avoid in Super League XVII.

And Grix knows the acid test will come this weekend when they look to build on their thrilling 17-16 victory over St Helens with another quality showing at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats tomorrow (3.30).

“One of our big failings last season was not being able to play at a good intensity week in, week out,” said Grix.

“So often we’d play well one week and then tend to drop off the next. The very top teams just don’t do that.

“We’re obviously determined to be a top team, and we’re taking steps to make sure that becomes the case.

“As a result, the aim this week is to make sure we back up from the high of St Helens last week with an another top performance against Wakefield.

“If we do that then we showed stay right up there.”

Grix made a name for himself during a two-year spell at the Wildcats.

And he admits it’s a ground he likes.

“It’s a good, traditional venue, and I’ve got very fond memories of my time there,” he added.

“There’s always a cracking atmosphere and the fans are close to you.

“On top of that, the playing surface is spot-on and it’s the sort of pitch that can bring the very best out of you.

“I’m looking forward to it, and so are the rest of the boys.

“After the start we’ve made everyone’s got a smile on their face and the aim is to make sure we don’t lose them.

“When things are going as well as they are at the moment, you look forward to coming in to training every day.

“It’s a feeling I don’t think any of us want to lose.”

Grix could be one of up to five former Wakefield men in Huddersfield’s line-up this weekend.

Also in coach Nathan Brown’s 19-man squad are Danny Brough, Aaron Murphy, Tommy Lee and Luke George.

At the same time, however, there could be four ex-Giants in the Wakefield side.

Danny Kirmond, Andy Raleigh and Kyle Wood look set to play after leaving the Galpharm at the end of last season, while Oliver Wilkes – who was at Huddersfield a decade ago – is also ready to feature.

“I suppose all these links add to what should be a great derby occasion,” continued Grix.

“I’m still really good mates with a lot of players who are at Wakefield, and it’s always good to catch up at them.

“There’s been a fair bit of banter flying between the clubs this week, with everyone threatening to do this, that and the other to each other.

“That makes for an even more exciting afternoon for everyone.”
