HUDDERSFIELD Giants are looking to make their Under 8s curtain-raiser which was played ahead of the home Super League clash with Leeds Rhinos an annual event.

Over 150 children took part in the event on the Galpharm Stadium pitch 11 days ago.

Six games took place before the Giants-Rhinos top-flight fixture, with teams representing Newsome Panthers, Moldgreen, Dewsbury Celtic, Dewsbury Moor, Thornhill, Shaw Cross, Meltham All Blacks, Batley Boys and Huddersfield St Josephs all taking part.

Giants officials have now received feedback from all the clubs involved, and club community development manager Ryan McNeely has hailed it a resounding success.

“It was great to see teams throughout the Kirklees area grace the Galpharm pitch,” he said.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for the children taking part and everyone had a great time.

“Such was the success of it that we will be looking to make this an annual fixture at the Galpharm.”

The Super League match official for the Giants v Leeds game was Richard Silverwood, who has just been announced as a surprise choice to take charge of the Test match between Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane on Friday, May 8.

He was referee of the year in 2006.
