CONFIDENT Giants coach Jon Sharp believes his players are ready to pass a test of character as well as a test of skill at Leigh tomorrow (6.05).

Huddersfield head to Hilton Park knowing they will face opponents who are desperate to mark their first game in Super League with a bang.

That makes the Centurions dangerous hosts.

But while Sharp is warning his players to be braced for an early onslaught, he believes they are ready to put in a top show in their opening game of Super League X.

"I'm expecting tomorrow to be a highly-competitive game, with very little between the teams," he predicted.

"It will be a nerve-wracking time, there's no doubt about that, but I am 100% confident my players will react positively to the pressure. In fact, I'm sure they will thrive on it.

"We know that Leigh will be gunning for us right from the start and one thing they won't be lacking is enthusiasm.

"When I was assistant coach at St Helens we played Widnes in their first game back in Super League three years ago and they gave us the fright of our lives.

"It's something I haven't forgotten, and I've made the players here aware of that fact.

"Everyone is talking about how important it is for Leigh to make a good start, but it's just as important for us to put down an early marker.

"It's a big game for everyone, although we're happy for the rugby league public to talk up Leigh and leave us alone. That eases all the pressure."

Sharp was naming his 18-man squad after training today, with new signings Brad Drew, Paul Jackson and Chris Thorman all ready to be handed prominent roles.

The only player unavailable for selection is Michael De Vere, who is expected to return to action next month after a knee reconstruction operation.

Opponents Leigh will be led out by new signing Jason Ferris in the absence of club captain and former Giants skipper Darren Fleary.

The vastly-experienced 32-year-old has undergone minor knee surgery and will make his Leigh debut in two weeks time.

Also missing is another ex-Giants prop in the shape of Richard Marshall, who has a thumb injury and is also a few games away from returning.
