Steve Tyrer is not ruling out a dramatic upset when Halifax take on his old club Widnes Vikings in a Tetley’s Challenge Cup fourth round tie at The Shay on Sunday (2.00pm).
Halifax overcame community club Hull Dockers 70-6 in the third round to secure a meeting with the Super League team and Tyrer, who made 10 appearances for Widnes before joining Halifax, says he and his team-mates go into the clash without fear.
“We go into every match believing that we can get a win and this one is no different,” said Tyrer.
“Of course everyone knows that if Widnes come and play to their best then they should win but that will not stop us giving it our best shot.
“Every team has a weakness and if we can find theirs and exploit it then anything is possible.
“As a club we have not drawn a Super League team in the last few seasons and that makes this a really exciting challenge because it adds that extra spice which we can hopefully thrive on.
“It is fair to say that we have had an incredibly tough set of fixtures to start off the season with.
“Losing to Batley and Featherstone in the manner which we did was disappointing and there are more tricky games to come, so finding good form quickly is our priority.
“We gave our best performance of the season to beat Doncaster at the weekend and the timing could not be better.”
However Tyrer acknowledges that Halifax will need to improve still further if they are to claim a famous scalp..
“I had a couple of fantastic spells at Widnes and drawing them in the Cup is a dream come true,” he said. “I actually live in Widnes so the whole tie has a special feel for me.
“There are some brilliant people over there who I have fond memories of and having them come over to our ground will be a fantastic experience.
“There is such a huge incentive to get through because we are at the stage where every game is massive and there are so many fantastic ties that could be drawn.
“Games like these are the reason why the Cup is such a great competition. It is the magic of the cup.”
