GIANTS assistant coach Paul Anderson has made it clear tomorrow night’s Super League XVI clash at Craven Park (5.45) isn’t all about Willie Mason.

Hype has surrounded the colourful former Australia Test forward from the moment he arrived in England two weeks ago to take up a three-year Hull KR contract.

He marked his debut with a blockbusting display to help Rovers secure a 20-22 home triumph over Crusaders.

But the 30-year-old was brought back down to earth – along with his new teammates – a week later when the Robins suffered a shock 34-18 defeat at Salford City Reds.

And the vastly-experienced Anderson know the Giants have the armoury capable of making it a tough night for Mason and co.

“From what we can tell, Willie Mason seems to be doing a decent job for them,” said former Great Britain prop Anderson.

“His arrival certainly created a great deal of interest, and the fact it got people talking about the game was a big plus point.

“But his involvement tomorrow won’t be the deciding factor as to whether Hull KR win or lose this game.

“What will decide that is the way his team plays as a collective and, more importantly for us, the way we play.

“There’s no doubt Willie’s a big fella, and he’s a threat when he’s got the ball and can rattle you in defence.

“But there are ways around that, which we hope will be the case this weekend.

“At the end of the day, Willie Mason is just one player in what we know is a very good team, and it’s up to us to make sure we don’t allow them to play.”

The Giants obviously make the trip to the east coast on the back of last Friday’s 20-6 home defeat to Super League champions Wigan Warriors.

And the Galpharm No2 is looking for a positive reaction from the squad.

“We’ve had a couple of good sessions this week and we’re focused and ready to go again,” he added. “The good thing about our game is that you don’t have too long to lick your wounds before you get the chance to go again.

“For us, that means this game at Hull KR when we hope to put a few things right from last week. We created enough opportunities to win two or three games against Wigan, so we don’t want to see that happen again.

“You usually find good teams respond well to a defeat, and hopefully that will be the case with us tomorrow night.”

The Giants Under 20s, meanwhile, are in Volvoline Cup action at Hull KR on Sunday (2.30).
